Police Notice To 11 Organisations Over Massive Cyber Theft

The Cyberabad Police in Hyderabad has issued notices to as many as 11 organisations, including three banks, a social media giant and an Information Technology services company, asking their representatives to appear before it in connection with a breach of data of 66.9 crore persons across the country, a senior police official said on Sunday.

The Cyberabad Police on Saturday said they arrested one person, Vinay Bhardwaj, who was allegedly involved in stealing, holding and selling personal and confidential data of 66.9 crore individuals and organisations belonging to 24 states and eight metropolitan cities, maintained in 104 categories.

The accused person was found in possession of the data of students of edu-tech organisations as well as the GST details of persons and companies, and the consumer/customer data of major organisations such as road transport corporations of various states, major e-commerce portals, social media platforms and fintech companies.

The 11 organisations to whom the notices were issued include two PSU banks and one private bank, a social media giant, an IT services company, an online grocery seller, a digital payments app and an online insurance platform, police said.

The 11 organisations' representatives have been told to appear before the police during the next one week to furnish details on how the companies maintained their databases, what procedures and policies were followed in this regard and who could access the data. This could help investigators ascertain how the database was leaked and accessed by an "unauthorised" person, among other relevant details, police said.

The arrested accused was operating through a website, 'InspireWebz', at Faridabad, Haryana and selling databases to clients through cloud drive links, police said.

In March, Cyberabad Police arrested seven people of a gang who were allegedly involved in the theft and sale of sensitive data of the government and important organisations, including details of 2.55 lakh defence personnel as well as the personal and confidential data of about 16.8 crore citizens across the country.

Siddaramaiah's Chief Ministerial Ambitions In Karnataka Revealed By His Son

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yatindra Siddaramaiah on Saturday expressed his wish to see his father become the Chief Minister again.

Speaking at Malavalli in the Mandya district, MLA Yatindra said, "Being a son I want to see my father becoming Karnataka Chief Minister once again. Of course, my father has said that he wants to become the Chief Minister again. He will take the state on the path of further development."

"Siddaramaiah's second constituency is still not finalized," he added.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his intention to contest in Varuna and Kolar constituencies, but the constituencies are not finalized yet.

His statement has confirmed the ongoing tussle between Siddaramaiah and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar.

The leadership tussle between former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar is "pushing the party towards darkness", said a senior leader of the party.

The fight for the chief ministerial post in the upcoming Assembly election in the state in May continues to deepen with the war of words flaring up from both the Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar factions.

The war has put the senior Congress leaders in a spot of bother about the present shape of the party. According to most of the party leaders, infighting has already become a "nightmare" for many Congress leaders.

The BJP has marked its entry into the political crisis surrounding Congress as BJP state president Nalinkumar Kateel tweeted, "Party workers from @siddaramaiah and @DKShivakumar who have disturbed the sleep of many in their party due to the illusion of CM. Disillusioned. The people of the state know that the weak high command is unable to fix the internal conflict, and if power is given to him, conflict is guaranteed."

According to a Congress source, the second list of Congress candidates will also be released soon.

Soon after the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly elections, Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday alleged that the ruling BJP has made the election system corrupt and hoped that the Election Commission would conduct free and fair elections.

"BJP has made the election system corrupt. They have started "Operation Lotus". They spend lots of money. The Election Commission should conduct the election in a free and fair manner. We hope they will do it," Siddaramaiah said.

However, welcoming the Election Commission's decision to hold a single-phase Assembly election in Karnataka on May 10, the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly said that his party was prepared for the polls.

"We had expected that the elections would be declared yesterday or today. I welcome that this election is happening in a single phase," he added.

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly polls.

"The notification for the elections to the 224-member Assembly would be issued on April 13 and that the last date for filing nomination papers would be April 20. The nomination papers would be scrutinised on April 21 and that last date for withdrawal of nominations would be April 24," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday while addressing a press conference in New Delhi.

The counting of votes will be done on May 13.

"Unnecessary Harassment": Punjab May Seek Action Over Stalled Dues By Centre

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said his government was exploring the possibility of moving court to seek the Rural Development Fund dues of Rs 3,000 crore from the Centre.

He stated this after announcing the closure of a toll plaza on the Kiratpur Sahib-Nangal-Una road, according to an official release.

Mr Mann said the state government was exploring the possibility of moving court to seek the dues from the Centre.

He alleged that the Union government was "unnecessarily harassing" the state by stalling the release of Rs 3,000 crore dues under the Rural Development Fund (RDF).

Bhagwant Mann said the state government had completed all the formalities but the Centre was deliberately stalling the release of the amount.

Last month, the chief minister had raised the issue of the release of RDF dues with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

Law Minister Shares Tweet Backing Him Over Remarks On Retired Judges

Days after a group of lawyers criticised him for his remarks on retired judges, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday shared on Twitter a statement extending support to him.

Mr Rijiju retweeted a tweet by Sanket Gupta, who identifies himself on Twitter as a Supreme Court advocate.

"We support statement made by honourable law minister @KirenRijiju sir. Please fill and circulate," Mr Gupta said, sharing the statement.

"We, the undersigned, are regular and active practitioners of the legal profession. We have read with a sense of alarm reports appearing in the media that a paltry number of lawyers had issued a statement condemning the remarks of...Rijiju to the effect that three-four retired activist judges had been making anti-India statements...," read the statement.

Addressing a media event on March 18, the minister had claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are part of the "anti-India gang" were trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

Last week, more than 300 lawyers, including 62 senior advocates practising in the Supreme Court, had issued a statement condemning the comments made by Mr Rijiju.

The Special Investigation Team, constituted to probe the allegations of sexual harassment against Sandeep Singh, the ex-Haryana sports minister, on Saturday submitted an application for brain-mapping of the accused, police said.

The application was submitted by the police to the district court in Chandigarh on Saturday.

"An application for brain mapping of the accused by SIT has been filed by Chandigarh police in the district court. It is under consideration," Ram Gopal (DSP), PRO Chandigarh Police said.

Gopal said that Chandigarh Police had registered a case, and constituted an SIT in this connection.

"It is part of the investigation. I can't say anything on this," Gopal added.

Chandigarh Police registered an FIR against Singh under sections 354, 354A, 354B, 342, and 506 of the IPC and initiated an investigation.

Amid allegations, Singh on January 1 said that he had handed over the responsibility of the Sports Department to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar pending the investigation.
