Bail Plea Of Hemant Soren's Aide Rejected In Jharkhand Illegal Mining Case

The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Pankaj Mishra, the former political representative of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in a money laundering case related to illegal mining.

Mr Mishra was arrested in July last year by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhary dismissed Mr Mishra's bail application after hearing arguments in the case.

The ED had filed a charge sheet against Mr Mishra and his two aides -- Bachhu Yadav and Prem Prakash -- on September 16 last year before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi.

"PMLA investigation revealed that Pankaj Mishra, who enjoys political clout, being the representative of the Chief Minister, MLA from Barhait, Sahibganj, Jharkhand controls the illegal mining businesses as well as inland ferry services in Sahibganj and its adjoining areas through his accomplices," the ED had alleged in a statement earlier.

"He exercises considerable control over the mining of stone chips and boulders as well as installation and operations of several crushers, set up across various mining sites in Sahibganj," the statement had claimed.

It had said proceeds of crime amounting to about Rs 42 crore "acquired" by Mr Mishra have been identified.

The agency had also claimed that it has "identified" proceeds of crimes, relating to illegal mining in the state, to the tune of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

The ED filed a case under the PMLA against Mr Mishra in March last year, alleging that he "illegally grabbed or amassed huge assets in his favour".

It took cognisance of a state police FIR filed against Mr Mishra at Barharwa police station in Sahibganj district, and some other police complaints filed in illegal mining trade instances under various sections of the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, among others.

How AAP Will Divide Up Manish Sisodia's 18 Portfolios

The 18 portfolios of the Delhi government handled by Manish Sisodia will be divided among two ministers of the Delhi government for now, sources have told NDTV. Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand will each be in charge of two signature portfolios of Mr Sisodia, sources said.

Mr Anand will be looking after the showcase departments of Education and Health, which the Aam Aadmi Party considers its crown jewels.

Kailash Gehlot, one of the senior members of Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet, will be in charge of the vital power and water departments. AAP's delivery on its promise of free power and water in Delhi is seen as a key aspect of its sweeping victory in Punjab.

He will also oversee finance, the most crucial department ahead of the Delhi budget due in March.

Mr Sisodia, arrested in connection with the alleged liquor scam in Delhi, stepped down as a minister today. So did another Delhi minister, Satyendar Jain, who has been in jail for around eight months.

Before quitting, Mr Sisodia was handling 18 of Delhi's 33 ministries, including health, which was the responsibility of Satyendar Jain till his arrest.

Party sources said there will be no addition to the cabinet till the Delhi budget is presented next month.

Sources say Mr Gahlot will take over eight portfolios that also include Home, Urban Development, Planning, Public works Department, Irrigation and Flood Control. Mr Anand's share includes Land and Building, Vigilance, Services, Tourism, Art Culture and Language, Labour, Employment and Industries.

The AAP government had started out with seven ministers, and now has only five. Mr Kejriwal, the face of the party and the government, has not handled any department so far.

There is speculation that the crunch might tie him up with governance in Delhi ahead of a string of state elections this year and the general elections the next.

AAP, which got the national party status with last year's Gujarat elections, was planning to contest in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Mr Sisodia faces corruption allegations in connection with a new liquor sale policy in 2021. The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing of the policy, for which kickbacks to the tune of Rs 30 crore were paid by a liquor lobby it dubbed the "South Group".

The policy would have led to a 12 per cent profit for them, of which 6 per cent was routed to public servants through middlemen, the agency claimed.

Couple Gets Life In Jail For Killing Daughter Born Without Ear

A couple was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Indore in Madhya Pradesh for killing their three-month-old daughter, who was born without an ear, and disposing of her body in a garbage dump.

Pappu Rawal (50) and his wife Sangeeta Rawal (45) were convicted under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for killing their child with a kitchen plier, a prosecution official said.

The child's body was found wrapped in cloth in a garbage heap in Khajrana area here on March 16, 2016.

The child, who was the second daughter of the couple, did not have an ear, due to which they disowned her and killed her, the official said.

However, DNA tests established them as the biological parents and a probe found them guilty.

Assistant District Public Prosecution Officer Avisarika Jain convinced the court about the couple's guilt through circumstantial and scientific evidence, the official said.

Kerala Temple Introduces Mechanical Elephant For Performing Rituals

In a first in Kerala, a life-like mechanical elephant was on Sunday dedicated to the deity in a temple near here for performing daily rituals from now on, instead of a real pachyderm.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India joined hands with award-winning actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, and held the 'Nadayiruthal' ceremony of 'Irinjadappilly Raman', a robotic elephant, at Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in the district.

PETA said Raman will help conduct ceremonies at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free manner and thereby supports real elephants' rehabilitation and lives in forests and end the horror of captivity for them.

"An inaugural ceremony held today was followed by a performance by the percussion ensemble led by Peruvanam Satheesan Marar. Subjecting live elephants to the extreme loudness of the timpani is cruel, as it is damaging and distressing for live elephants," PETA said in a release.

Ms Thiruvothu said these days we have access to understanding what animals are forced to endure when humans use them for entertainment.

"It's high time we made stronger and more impactful strides towards stopping such abuse and letting animals have respectful and dignified lives... I am delighted to support PETA India in helping Sree Krishna Temple worshippers experience the joy and sanctity of religious functions in an exciting, modern, and conscientious manner," she was quoted in the release.

Head priest of the temple Rajkumar Namboothiri said they were "extremely happy and grateful" to receive the mechanical elephant which will help them to conduct rituals and festivals in a cruelty-free manner and hoped that other shrines also consider replacing live elephants for rituals.

PETA claimed most elephants in captivity in the country, including in Kerala, are being held illegally or have been transported to a different state without permission.

The frustration of captivity leads elephants to develop and display abnormal behaviour, PETA said, adding that, at their wit's end, frustrated elephants often snap and try to break free, running amok and so harming humans, other animals, and property.

"According to figures compiled by the Heritage Animal Task Force, captive elephants killed 526 people in Kerala in a 15-year period. Thechikkattukavu Ramachandran, who has been in captivity for about 40 years and is one of the most often used elephants in Kerala's festival circuit, has reportedly killed 13 individuals-- six mahouts, four women, and three elephants," the release said.

PETA urged all venues and events using elephants to switch to lifelike mechanical elephants or other means in place of real elephants.

It also called for retiring elephants already in captivity to sanctuaries where they can live unchained and in the company of other elephants, healing psychologically and physically from the trauma of years of isolation, captivity, and abuse.

"Inexcusable Slip-Up": Congress On Abul Kalam Azad Missing From Poster

The Congress apologised on Sunday after an advertisement on its 85th plenary session, which did not feature India's first education minister and freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, triggered a controversy and the party received flak from several quarters.

The party said it was "an inexcusable slip-up", for which responsibility was being fixed and action would be taken.

The full-page advertisement, published in dailies on the third day of the plenary session on Saturday, featured Congress leaders of the past -- Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Sarojini Naidu.

Sharing the advertisement on Twitter, Congress MP Manish Tewari said, "The @INCIndia has a pantheon of Muslim leaders who struggled against fissiparous tendencies especially within their community that led to creation of Pakistan & dedicated themselves to inclusive idea of India. Someone wants to airbrush their contribution from annals of History."

Several people hit out at the Congress for leaving out Azad in its advertisement.

"Today an ad released by INC did not carry a photograph of Maulana Azad. It was an inexcusable slipup. Responsibility for it is being fixed & action will be taken," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.

"Meanwhile this is a most sincere apology from us. He will always remain an iconic & inspiring figure for us & India," he said.

Mr Ramesh also responded to a tweet by a party leader which pointed out that Azad's picture featured on the dias of the plenary session, saying, "Hope all those who took us to task (justifiable as it may have been) for one goof do take note."

BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali hit out at the Congress, saying Rahul Gandhi will have to confront and clean RSS elements in his party that are responsible for such a self-goal.

"How can INC forget Maulana Azad and his contribution? Earlier also, Pranab Mukherjee and Shivraj Patil approved installation of Savarkar's portrait in Parliament," Mr Ali said.

BJP MP and its youth wing president Tejasvi Surya said it was "hypocritical" on the part of the Congress to include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri and P V Narasimha Rao in its advertisement.

"The nation remembers how Nehru family treated these stalwarts & tried erasing their legacy. This advert is only laughable!" he tweeted.

Arvind Kejriwal's First Big Challenge After Manish Sisodia's Arrest

The Arvind Kejriwal government is staring at a possible crisis with the CBI arresting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who holds as many as 18 of the total 33 departments, including education, finance and home.

The arrest of Mr Sisodia comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi's then health minister, in June last year. Both have led what the Aam Aadmi Party describes as the successful transformation of Delhi's education and health services, contributing to the party's popularity and continued electoral success.

Their absence leaves Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with no heavyweight lieutenant to implement his governance agenda in Delhi.

The immediate challenge for Mr Kejriwal is to present the Delhi government budget as scheduled and find Mr Sisodia's replacement.

Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party said Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot may present the Delhi government budget for the next financial year.

"As there was a possibility that the deputy chief minister may be arrested by the CBI, Mr Gahlot was attending budget-related meetings for the last few days.

"Gahlot is likely to present the 2023-24 budget. It is scheduled to be presented next month," an AAP functionary told PTI.

According to the Delhi government's websites, there are a total of 33 departments.

Of these, Mr Sisodia looks after 18, including health, education, public works department (PWD), services, finance, power, home and urban development. He is also in charge of all other departments not specifically allotted to any minister.

Apart from Mr Kejriwal, the Delhi government has six cabinet ministers, including jailed Satyendar Jain who is still a minister without a portfolio. Mr Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in connection with a money laundering case.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai has only three departments while Imran Hussain is in charge of only two departments -- food and civil supplies, and election.

Kailash Gahlot is in charge of six departments, including revenue, and transport while Raj Kumar Anand has four portfolios.

The CBI on Sunday evening arrested Mr Sisodia, who is close to Mr Kejriwal, in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22 after nearly eight hours of questioning.

This was the second round of questioning of Mr Sisodia after the agency registered a case on August 17 last year. He was quizzed on October 17 last year.

Mr Kejriwal termed the arrest "dirty politics" and asserted that his deputy was innocent.

"Manish is innocent. His arrest is dirty politics. It has angered people quite a lot. People are watching everything. People now understand everything and will give a reply to this. It will boost our spirit and our struggle will only get stronger," Mr Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Explained: Who Is Lovepreet Singh, Punjab Radical Leader's Aide Freed By Cops

Lovepreet Singh walked out of jail today after a pro-Khalistan organisation lay siege to Ajnala police station in Punjab's Amritsar. But who is he and who is the Amritpal Singh that led the group to Ajnala police station.

Who is Lovepreet Singh

Lovepreet Singh aka Toofan Singh belongs from Gurdaspur in Punjab. He was arrested for his connection in a kidnapping and assault case. Lovepreet Singh is also a part of Waris Punjab De, and a close aide of Waris Punjab De's chief Amritpal Singh.

Who is Amritpal Singh

Amritpal Singh is the chief of Waris Punjab De, a separatist organisation started by Deep Sidhu. Amritpal Singh returned from Dubai last year. He was recently made the head of Waris Punjab De at an event in Moga district, the village of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale.

What happened on February 23 at Ajnala police station

After Lovepreet Singh's arrest on February 16, Amritpal Singh warned the police to release him, or else he would come with a huge crowd on February 23. Amritpal Singh's supporters started gathering in the morning at Ajnala station.

The police tried to stop them since they were low in number. Then Amritpal Singh reached Ajnala from Raia's village Jallupur Khera. In half an hour, the situation became such that the police were attacked with swords. Several policemen including senior officers, at Ajnala police post were taken over by Amritpal Singh and his supporters.

What did Punjab Police do

The Punjab Police decided to form a special investigative team to probe the first information report (FIR). Lovepreet Singh was released at 4 pm. "Want to ensure peace. It's hard-earned in Punjab," the Punjab Police chief said.

The whole incident has come at the time when Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been inviting investments to Punjab. This event is not the standalone incident of a separatist uprising in the state. There have been cases in the previous government as well. For now, the situation remains tricky for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab.

Adani Group Sought 94,000 Square Metres Of Land In Gujarat For Township

The Gautam Adani group has sought 94,000 square metres of 'gauchar' (grazing land) and non-arable land from the Gujarat government to build a township and special economic zone, the state Assembly was informed on Friday.

Responding to a query raised by Aam Aadmi Party's Jamjodhpur MLA Hemant Ahir, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who handles the revenue portfolio, said the group had sought 93,900 square metres of land in Khodiyar village in Ahmedabad and Dantali village in Gandhinagar.

Bhupendra Patel, in his written reply, informed the House the Adani Group had sought this land in exchange for its own plots of equal area in these villages.

It has also sought 202 square metres of non-arable land in Jaspur village in Gandhinagar without this exchange mechanism, the Chief Minister said.

The Adani Group wants land in Ahmedabad district to "develop a Special Economic Zone as part of its state-of-the-art township" while land in Gandhinagar district has been sought for the purpose of a township, the Chief Minister said.

These demands are pending with the state government, Mr Patel added.

The Budget session of the Gujarat Assembly is currently underway.

"Congress Was Special Purpose Vehicle For Independence Movement": Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said the Congress party was a "Special Purpose Vehicle" for independence movement, without any ideology, whereas the BJP was formed on the basis of an ideological pillar called "cultural nationalism".

India's story has begun and by 2047 creation of a "great India" is certain, he said, as he credited the people for a "paradigm shift" in the country, by bringing in the Narendra Modi led BJP government.

Mr Shah was speaking at an interactive session on "Indian Polity - 65 years Scenario & Paradigm Shift Under Modi Ji" organised by 'Samvada' here.

Noting that Congress which contributed in a big way for the freedom struggle is today completely "fallen" into the dynastic system, and its internal democracy has fully eroded, the Union Minister said, Socialist parties too after Lohia era gradually turned into caste based party initially, and then went on to become dynastic parties.

Dubbing the RJD and Samajwadi Party as 'dynastic,' he said, "here too in Karnataka JD(S) is a dynastic party, you can't find anyone in their family who doesn't contest polls, everyone wants contest polls and lead Karnataka, I don't understand as to who runs the house. I'm not opposing them. I'm placing the facts before you." Communist's thinking about the economy is "unnatural and narrow", and this has gradually caused their end globally, he further said, "whereas the Jana Sangh had to fight a long struggle to become Janata Party first and the BJP, but we have kept our ideology and party democracy intact."

According to him, the Congress party was not born with any ideology, but it was an organisation, to which educated Indians gradually started getting associated with, with a demand for freedom.

"No one can take away Congress' great contribution in getting freedom for the country, but it did not have an ideology."

"Congress never had one thinking or ideology, whether it is cultural ideology or economic ideology or ideology with respect to building the nation. All those who wanted freedom got associated with the Congress thinking it to be a platform," he said.

"If I have to say in the modern educated Bengaluru's language, the Congress party was a Special Purpose Vehicle for independence. Congress friends should not take my words in a wrong sense, I'm just trying to explain in a simple way....the only intention was to make the country rid of the British, the whole country was with them on this," he said.

Suggesting that this was the reason why Gandhiji had called for the disbanding of Congress party, after independence as its work was over, the former BJP President said that Gandhi had asked people to form their own party based on their ideology and had said that people will choose their leader.

"But, this did not happen as the credit of getting freedom was in the Congress' account and its leaders then did not want to leave it," he said.

Averring that the ideology of BJP was "cultural nationalism", Mr Shah said, other than India, rest are geopolitical countries, created after war or inventions or partitions, while ours is a "geo-cultural country" formed out of a common cultural ecosystem, and our party fully believes in it.

He said BJP also believes in "integral humanism", and that the deprived and poor have the first right on development, irrespective of their caste or religion, unlike former PM Manmohan Singh, who said minorities should have first right.

Today BJP is the world's largest party with more than 11 crore workers, more than 1,500 legislators, more than 400 MPs and has a government on over 66 per cent land area of this country, he said adding that "as there was courage in our policies or ideology we have reached this far."

Chief Minister Basavaraj was also present in the event, which was attended by select invitees from various walks of life.

Pointing out that corruption, inflation, crony capitalism, and policy paralysis had engulfed the country before 2014, Mr Shah said, after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister politics was taken away from the privileged towards those potential, and the concept of power for potential was created, bringing in a "paradigm shift".

BJP freed India from, casteism, dynastic and appeasement which had destroyed the country and its policies, he said, as he defended the government's strong decisions like GST, demonitisation, fight against corruption, stating that it was for the good of the people, despite resistance within and the threat of losing the vote bank looming large.

Listing out various policies, initiatives and programmes of the Modi led government for the welfare of the people and in national interest, the Home Minister also pointed to the growth in India's stature globally, and as fifth largest economy.

He spoke about the Modi government's zero tolerance towards terrorism, and also sought to clarify BJP's position on regional languages stating that "Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, are all our languages."

Pitching for education in mother tongue, he said, "language is not proof for our IQ or knowledge, it is only the expression of IQ or knowledge."

Advising people to always vote looking at a party and its leadership, Shah said, leadership is not an individual, he is an institution who is associated with the legacy, ideology and development programmes of the party.

In Shiv Sena Row, Now Focus On Claim To Party Headquarters, Mouthpiece

With the Election Commission (EC) recognising Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction as the real Shiv Sena, now whether his group also stakes claim to the party headquarters 'Shiv Sena Bhavan' and party mouthpiece 'Saamana', both currently controlled by the Uddhav Thackeray camp.

While the Shiv Sena Bhavan is located at Dadar in central Mumbai, the 'Saamana' head office is situated in the nearby Prabhadevi area. Both these establishments are currently run by different trusts.

CM Shinde has maintained that he would not stake claim to the Shiv Sena Bhavan even though he has got the party name and symbol. However, the rival camp is wary and on guard. Recently, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and Thane MP Rajan Vichare submitted a letter to Thane Police Commissioner Jai Jeet Singh, urging him to thwart any attempts by the Shinde group to usurp the Shiv Sena 'shakhas' (local party offices) in the city.

The EC last week recognised the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena and allotted it the party's 'bow and arrow' symbol, giving a jolt to the Thackeray camp. Earlier, the Shinde group was officially referred to as 'Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena' and the Thackeray group as Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). The Supreme Court is hearing various petitions related to the tussle between the Shinde and Thackeray factions.

Due to the EC verdict, the Thackeray family lost control of the party that was founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray. The party, founded on the principles of justice for the sons of the soil, had adopted Hindutva as its key ideology and partnered with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1984, an alliance that continued till 2019 when Uddhav Thackeray joined hands with arch-rivals Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress to become the chief minister.

The Shiv Sena Bhavan is controlled by 'Shivai Seva Trust'. Its founding trustees include late Bal Thackeray and his wife late Meena Thackeray. Many of the founding trustees are not alive now.

Its present trustees include senior leaders Subhash Desai, Diwakar Raote, Leeladhar Dake, former Mumbai mayor Vishaka Raut and Uddhav Thackeray himself.

While 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena mouthpiece founded by late Bal Thackeray, is managed by Prabhodhan Prakashan, whose printer-publisher is Thackeray loyalist Subhash Desai.

Uddhav Thackeray had resigned as the editor of 'Saamana' after assuming the chief minister's charge in November 2019. He had handed over the editor's post to his wife Rashmi Thackeray in March 2020. However, after the Shiv Sena split, Uddhav again took over as the editor in August 2022. Sanjay Raut is the executive editor of the party mouthpiece.

Senior journalist Prakash Akolkar, who has written 'Jai Maharashtra' - a book on Shiv Sena's history, said, "CM Shinde has taken a mature decision of not staking claim to the Shiv Sena Bhavan and Saamana as both these institutions are operated by private trusts. Staking claim to these establishments would lead to further legal complications. It is also his indirect message to supporters to exercise restraint." Harshal Pradhan, a close aide of Uddhav Thackeray, said there are 350 Shiv Sena 'shakhas' in Mumbai, while outside Mumbai there is one such unit in each municipal ward.

Shakhas are the premises where the Shiv Sainiks (party workers) gather for political meetings, resolving local issues of citizens.

Vaibhav Purandare, the author of 'Bal Thackeray and the Rise of the Shiv Sena' said, "As a political party, the Shiv Sena directly owns very few properties. Shiv Sena Bhavan and Saamana are owned by trusts. While most of the Shiv Sena shakhas are either owned by the 'shakha pramukhs' or by private individuals who have given their property to set up these offices. It is up to these individuals to decide which way to go."

Man Kidnapped, Killed Minor, Body Recovered Weeks Later: Delhi Cops

A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering an adolescent girl, whose decomposed body was recovered recently by police, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in west Delhi's Nangloi area.

The accused has been arrested, they said, adding that the post-mortem report will confirm sexual assault.

A case of kidnapping was registered in Nangloi police station under section 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of the IPC on February 10 on the statement of the 11-year-old's mother, a senior police officer said.

According to the woman, her daughter had gone to school on February 9 and did not return after that, officer said.

After registering the case, an investigation was taken up.

During investigation, raids were conducted in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Accused Rohit alias Vinod, a resident of Dairywala Bagh, Paschim Vihar, was nabbed on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Harendra Kumar Singh said.

The accused disclosed that he met the girl on February 9. After befriending her, he took her to a secluded place in the Ghewra area where he killed her and left, the DCP said.

He took the police team to the spot where the decomposed body of the minor was recovered. The crime and forensic science laboratory (FSL) teams were called and the body was sent to the mortuary, police said.

On Wednesday, an autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to the family for last rites. The accused has been taken on police remand for further investigation, they said, adding that the section of murder has been added to the case.

The motive of the killing is being ascertained. The autopsy report will confirm any sexual assault, police added.

According to sources, the initial investigation has revealed that the victim did not go to school on February 9. The accused found her alone at a park where he approached her.

They both walked together for four to five kilometres along a railway track. Her body was recovered from a secluded area near the track. The accused was familiar with the area as he used to take the same route when he worked in a factory earlier, sources said.

The family members of the deceased identified the body through her school bag. The previous involvement, if any, of the accused is being checked, they added.

"Put Family Facing Eviction In Taj Hotel": Bombay High Court In Jest

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for seeking to evict a man and his family from their transit tenement and in a lighter vein said the planning body should put them up at the Taj hotel in south Mumbai.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale questioned the 48-hour eviction notice sent to the man, whose original home was pulled down for a public project, and asked if MMRDA expected him to “stand at Flora Fountain (a Mumbai landmark) and beg”.

The court was hearing a petition filed by one Shobhnath Singh challenging MMRDA's notice of February 8, 2023, that asked him to vacate the tenement within 48 hours failing which he and his family would be forcibly removed.

The petitioner submitted that he did not have an alternative accommodation and that the threat of forcible dispossession was unreasonable.

The bench asked MMRDA how they could give such a short notice to the petitioner without providing an alternative accommodation.

“The petitioner and his family are already dispossessed from their original flat and have been living in this transit home. Now you (MMRDA) want him out of the transit home too?” Justice Patel said.

The court held that pending hearing of the petition, interim protection ought to be given to the petitioner.

“If you (MMRDA) oppose this then I will direct you to put him (petitioner) and his family up at the Taj hotel,” Justice Patel said in a lighter vein.

The bench was informed by the petitioner's lawyer that the MMRDA had locked the tenement. The court directed the MMRDA to remove the lock immediately and posted the matter for hearing on March 10.

As per the plea, the petitioner's original house in suburban Kanjurmarg was demolished for a public project.

He and his family have been put up in a transit tenement in the same area since 2017.

Advocate Aparna Patkar, who represented MMRDA, told the court that the transit tenement was to be granted to other project-affected persons and hence the notice of eviction was issued.

A group of ex-servicemen on Tuesday called on Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi over the killing of an Army jawan, allegedly by a DMK Councillor and shared their anguish with him, the Raj Bhavan said.

They also flagged the "lukewarm response" of the state law enforcement to the issue, the Governor's office said in a tweet, "Some Ex-Servicemen met Governor and shared their collective anguish at the gruesome killing of M Prabhu, a serving soldier by an armed gang led by a DMK councillor and lukewarm response of the state law enforcement, " a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Raj Bhavan said.

"Indeed, it is a matter of serious concern," it added. Mr Prabhu, who was severely thrashed by a DMK functionary and his accomplices, died last week and six people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

"BJP Cheated People On Naga Political Issue": Congress Chief At Poll Rally

Accusing the BJP-led central government of cheating the people of Nagaland on the Naga political problem, the Congress today asserted that given a chance, it will fulfil the aspirations of the citizens of the northeastern state.

Solving the decades-old Naga issue is one of the top-most commitments in the Congress' manifesto, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said at an election rally here.

"The Narendra Modi government does not have the political will to put into effect the agreed solutions to the Naga political issue and has cheated the people of Nagaland and the country as well," he said.

Stating that civil society organisations have been demanding the implementation of political solutions, Mr Kharge claimed that the state government is indulging in delaying tactics on the pretext that more talks are needed.

"Prime Minister Modi announced on August 3, 2015, that the Naga issue has been resolved with the signing of the Naga Accord which was later renamed as Framework Agreement with the NSCN-IM. But nearly eight years down the line, this has become an empty boast," he said.

To find a solution to the decades-old problem, the Centre has been holding separate negotiations with NSCN-IM since 1997 and the Working Committee of Naga National Political Group (NNPG), comprising at least seven groups, since 2017.

The Modi government inked a Framework Agreement with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed Position with NNPGs in 2017. However, the final solution is yet to be attained with NSCN-IM remaining adamant on its demand for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.

While releasing the BJP manifesto for the Nagaland election on February 14, party president J P Nadda asserted that the solution to the Naga political issue is in the final stage as the Narendra Modi government is tirelessly working on it. However, the manifesto has no mention of it.

Claiming that the Congress is the only party that had initiated the process to find a solution to the Naga political issue, Mr Kharge said, "Even now, this is one of the top-most commitments in our election manifesto".

Without naming the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO), which has been demanding a separate state comprising six districts of the state, the veteran Congress leader claimed that the BJP is bent on creating a division in Nagaland.

Abrogating Article 371A of the Constitution which gives special provision to Nagaland will pave the way for "easy implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, which is the mainstay of the divisive agenda of the BJP", he alleged.

"The BJP's politics is aimed at destroying the indigenous and unique culture of Nagas," he alleged.

If voted to power, the Congress will implement measures for the development of the Eastern Nagaland region, Mr Kharge said.

The region will get its own mini secretariat and directorate of school education, the Department of Under Developed Areas will be relocated to Tuensang while dialogue between the governments of India and Myanmar will be initiated, he said.

A section of the citizens of Myanmar are Nagas.

"Given an opportunity, the Congress will fulfil the aspirations of the people of the state," he said at the rally.

The assembly election will be held on February 27 and votes will be counted on March 2.

Stop Demolition Of Religious Structures: Manish Sisodia To Delhi Lt Governor

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday appealed to Lt Governor V K Saxena to stop the proposed demolition of 74 religious structures for infrastructure development projects in the capital, saying it could hurt sentiments and lead to a serious law and order situation.

"Lakhs of devotees visit these religious structures and their demolition could trigger a law and order situation in the capital," a statement quoted Sisodia said.

Mr Sisodia's appeal came after the Delhi Police released reports, recommending that the religious structures should not be demolished.

The proposed infrastructure projects include the construction of flyovers, roads, and housing projects by the central government.

"The Delhi Police reports mention that the demolition of religious structures will lead to massive protests and law and order situation in the capital that might escalate to riots," he said.

The deputy Chief Minister said these structures can be protected by making changes to the project designs.

"In the era of modern architecture and technology, it is possible to modify designs to meet the requirements of the environment, and the same can be done in this case to save the temples, mazars, and gurudwaras," he said.

Development is essential, but it should not hurt people's religious sentiments, Manish Sisodia said.

Earlier this month, officials had said that Mr Saxena has recalled files related to several pending infrastructure projects citing "inaction" on the part of the Delhi government.

They alleged that despite the recommendations of a committee to remove the "unauthorised religious structures" that have held up several key infrastructure projects, the Delhi government's home department, headed by Sisodia, has kept 78 such proposals from various agencies pending since May last year.

Anti-Sikh Riots Accused Jagdish Tytler Among Delegates At Congress Meet

The Congress on Monday released a list of AICC delegates from Delhi, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former Union minister Jagdish Tytler, whose name figured in a probe panel report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The election of Tytler as an All India Congress Committee (AICC) delegate drew strong reactions from Delhi's ruling AAP and the BJP, which said it exposed the opposition party's character of creating division and chaos in the country.

The AICC delegates perform key roles in the party. They, along with Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates, will attend the party's 85th plenary session to be held in Raipur from February 24 to 26.

The AICC delegates form the electorate whenever there is an election for members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the top decision-making body of the party.

The Steering Committee of the party will take a call on February 24 on whether there will be elections for 11 of the 25 members of the CWC this time.

The Congress has 1,338 elected and 487 co-opted AICC delegates from across the country.

Former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are among the elected AICC members from Uttar Pradesh, which has the maximum number of delegates.

There are a total of 36 elected and 25 co-opted AICC delegates from Delhi.

Delhi Congress chief Anil Kumar Chaudhary, former Union minister Ajay Maken and former AICC general secretary (organisation) Janardan Dwivedi are among the elected AICC delegates from Delhi.

The list of elected delegates also includes Devendra Yadav, Manish Chatrath, Abhishek Dutt, Krishna Allavaru, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Sandeep Dikshit, Subhash Chopra and Alka Lamba.

Among the co-opted AICC members from Delhi are Praveen Davar, former Delhi ministers Haroon Yusuf and Krishna Tirath, boxer Vijender Singh, Ragini Nayak and K B Byju.

Targeting the Congress over the election of Tytler, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the Congress action shows its leader Rahul Gandhi who talked of "mohabbat ki dukan" during his Bharat Jodo Yatra is actually opening "nafrat ki dukan (shop of hatred)".

"The leader who spread maximum hatred during anti-Sikh riots in 1984 has been made an elected member of AICC. It would not be wrong to say that such leaders are spine of Congress," Bhatia charged.

Slamming the Congress Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Raghav Chadha said, "With another promotion for Jagdish Tytler, Congress' message for Sikhs is clear - that it will continue to indulge in a brazen display of insensitivity towards Sikhs. Like I said earlier, a pathological dislike for Sikhs is in Congress' DNA." The name of Tytler, once a formidable leader of the Congress in Delhi, figured in a report of the Nanavati Commission which probed into the anti-Sikh riots.

Delhi Government's Warning To Bike Taxis In The National Capital

The Transport department has cautioned bike taxis against running on the roads of Delhi, warning that it was a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, that would make aggregators liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

The use of two-wheelers for commercial purposes is in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The first offence could lead to a fine of Rs 5,000 while a second offence could incur a Rs 10,000 fine and imprisonment of up to a year, the department said in a public notice.

The driver will also lose their licence for three months under the circumstances.

The notice said some app-based companies are portraying themselves as aggregators in violation of the 1988 act. This will be punishable with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court refused to grant relief to bike taxi aggregator Rapido against the Maharashtra government's refusal to grant licence to it.

It had noted that amendments made to the Motor Vehicles Act in 2019 made it clear that aggregators cannot operate without a valid licence. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala noted that Pune's Regional Transport Office had rejected its plea for licence on December 21.

The bench said Roppen Transportation Services Private Limited (Rapido) can challenged the state government's January 19 notification which prohibited the use of "non-transport vehicle" from car pooling in Bombay High Court. It stated that the validity of the RTO's December order would stand subsumed by the subsequent wider decision of the state government.

JNU Students' Union Alleges Attack By BJP-Linked Body ABVP

The Left-controlled JNU Students' Union on Sunday alleged that the ABVP attacked some students after a march seeking justice for an IIT Bombay student who died by suicide. The ABVP has denied the charge.

The RSS-affiliated ABVP accused the Left-backed student outfits of "insulting" Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) organised seeking justice for IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki.

Solanki, 18, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on February 12, but his family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination.

In a statement, the JNUSU said, "ABVP has once again resorted to attacking students.... This was done soon after a candlelight march in solidarity with the call by Darshan Solanki's father.... ABVP does this once again to derail the movement against caste discrimination." The ABVP denied the charge and accused the "Left group" of removing a garland from a picture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and throwing it away.

The student outfit said it organised a function to mark the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

"Immediately after the programme, the students on the Left came there and removed the garland from the picture and threw it away," the ABVP said in a statement.

Gujarat Doctor Found Hanging, Son Accuses MP Of Issuing Threat: Cops

Days after a doctor from Veraval town in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district died allegedly by suicide, his son submitted an application to the police seeking registration of an FIR against a Member of Parliament and the lawmaker's father for “threatening” the medical practitioner and usurping nearly Rs 1.75 crore.

The Veraval City police station accepted the application by Dr Atul Chag's son Hitarth on Friday, and started further investigation into the case, said Superintendent of Police Manoharsinh Jadeja.

Dr Chag, an MD Physician, was a well-known doctor of the Veraval region. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hospital in the town on February 12. Police had found a one-line suicide note blaming the MP and his father.

While his family had claimed at that time that the note was indeed written by Dr Chag, police had said it had been sent for forensic analysis to ascertain its authenticity.

On Friday, Dr Chag's only son Hitarth approached the Veraval police station and submitted an application seeking registration of FIR against the lawmaker and his father under Indian Penal Code sections including 306 (abetment of suicide), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 506-2 (criminal intimidation).

As per the application, the MP and his father had a close relationship with Dr Chag for the last 20 years and the duo had borrowed nearly Rs 1.75 crore from the doctor in instalments since 2008 by winning his trust.

According to Hitarth, the MP's father had given four blank cheques to Dr Chag to win his trust. When the duo stopped responding to Dr Chag's repeated requests to return the money, the latter deposited one of the cheques of Rs 90 lakh in the bank but it was dishonoured, Hitarth said in his application.

When Dr Chag sought an explanation, the duo allegedly warned him of “dire consequences” and also threatened to abduct his only son. According to Hitarth, the MP had openly threatened his late father saying that nothing would happen to him as he is a lawmaker.

Days before the suicide, the duo had verbally abused Dr Chag and had also threatened to kill him and his son Hitarth for demanding the money back, as per the application.

The threat and the thought of losing money deeply upset the doctor, as per his son.

Hitarth further said that the note found by police on February 12 was indeed written by his father and his father took the extreme step out of shock and fear.

India Has Shown World The Real Meaning Of "Anti-Fragile": PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday explained the concept of "anti-fragile" related to the people of India in the context of challenges faced by the world in the last three years due to the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Welcoming business leaders from across the globe at ET Global Business Summit, PM Modi said, "Generally the span of three years is not very long time but if we look at the last three years, then it seems that the whole world has travelled a lot of time. When we met last time then masks were not part of our daily life. People thought that vaccines are only for children and for people suffering from deadly diseases. People must have planned their holidays. But after 5 days of ET summit of 2020, WHO declared COVID as a pandemic. Then we saw in small time the whole world changed. So too India also changed."

"We have heard discussions about the concept of 'anti-fragile'. A system that not only faces the adverse conditions but uses them and becomes stronger. When I heard the concept of 'anti-fragile' then I thought of the strength of the people of India," he said.

PM Modi said that India has shown the world how to change any adversity into opportunity.

"In last 3 years, when the world was suffering sometimes from Covid pandemic, sometimes from war and sometimes from the challenges of natural disasters, India and Indians displayed unprecedented strength. India has shown the world the real meaning of anti-fragile," PM Modi said.

"India has shown the world how to convert an adversity to opportunity. By studying the capability shown by India at the time of the biggest crisis in 100 years, humanity will be proud of it after 100 years," he added.

Gurugram Woman Cheated Of Rs 1.5 Crore Over Celebrity Cricket Match Promise

A Gurugram director of a private firm was allegedly duped of Rs 1.5 crore by four people who told her they help organise celebrity cricket matches and that she can make profit by investing in their project, police said on Thursday.

An FIR has been registered against the four including a couple -- Indu and Rajeev -- at Sector 50 police station based on a complaint filed by Babita Yadav, the director of Unnati Private Limited.

The company's office is located in the Space ITech Park in sector 50.

Ms Yadav alleged in her complaint that the couple and their two friends -- Praveen Sethi and Pawan Jangda -- took Rs 1.5 crore from her in 2018 in the name of organising cricket games involving Bollywood stars, but the matches never happened and they were also not returning her money.

"It was in March 2018 when my acquaintances Indu and Rajeev came to the office and said their friends Praveen Sethi and Pawan Jangda, residents of Jaipur, conduct celebrity matches and I can also join them and earn profit by investing money.

"The couple also claims they meet Boney Kapoor, Salman Khan and other famous celebrities of Bollywood and said that they also play the matches," she said.

She said that a month later the four met her at a hotel in Jaipur and told her that the match will be held in Delhi.

"On October 12 in 2018, the four accused came to my office for a meeting. Praveen and Pawan said that they are the owners of Signature Cricket League and are in a high position in the BCCI and asked to invest Rs 1.5 crore by December 31, 2018 and made a written agreement. Rs 85 lakh was transferred from my account while Rs 15 lakh from Balbir's wife Rekha's account in the account of the accused." She has claimed that Balbir was also present during the Jaipur hotel meeting.

"Later, they came to the office and took Rs 50 lakh more. After a three-month wait when the match did not happen, I asked them and they promised again and again to return money till August 2022 but did not give me my money," the woman said in her complaint.

She said she met them at a restaurant in sector 50 and demanded the money, but they said they will not give the money. "If I asked again, they would kill me." Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the four, under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using forged document), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC at Sector 50 police station.

"As per the complaint, an FIR has been registered and we are verifying the facts. Action will be taken as per the law," said inspector Rajesh Kumar, SHO of sector 50 police station.

"Am Taking Tipu Sultan's Name, What Will You Do?": A Owaisi Slams BJP

The first copies of the Constitution had the picture of Tipu Sultan, so will the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) burn it too, asked All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, while attacking BJP Karnataka chief's statement on Tipu Sultan.

Talking to ANI, the AIMIM said, "The Karnataka BJP chief said that supporters of Tipu Sultan should be killed. I am taking the name of Tipu Sultan, what will you do?"

"Does PM Modi agree with his views? It is an open call for genocide. This is nothing but pure hatred," he added.

He further said that the first copy of the Constitution had pictures of Rama, Lakshman, and Tipu Sultan.

"Those who made the Constitution loved the country much more than them (BJP). The first copy of the Constitution had pictures of Rama, Lakshman, Gautam Buddha, Akbar, Guru Nanak, Rani of Jhansi, and even Tipu Sultan. So, will the BJP burn it too," Mr Owaisi further said.

A Owaisi also attacked BJP leader Bandi Sanjay over his statement on the newly-built state secretariat.

"Shouldn't this be a matter of pride that a new state secretariat is being built in the state, which is even bigger than the Taj Mahal? It will help in bringing better governance. Why are you (BJP) talking about destroying it? Why can't you ever talk about uniting? What will you achieve by this?" he said.

Earlier this month, BJP leader Bandi Sanjay had stated that once BJP is voted to power in the 2023 Assembly polls, it would demolish the domes of the newly-built state secretariat since it reflected the culture of Nizams.

The inauguration of the Telangana Secretariat Building is scheduled for February 17th.

Notably, the Telangana Assembly elections are scheduled to be held this year.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Pitches For Virtual Hearings At Arbitral Centres

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud pitched for the use of technology in arbitral proceedings on Thursday and said the arbitration centres in the country should adopt protocols for holding virtual hearings.

Speaking at the "Delhi Arbitration Weekend" organised by the Delhi International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) here, the CJI said the country's arbitration space should foster gender diversity.

He said setbacks in any new system should be seen as an opportunity for growth rather than "sounding a death knell for adoption of technology".

"I take this opportunity to encourage the DIAC to draft and adopt a protocol on virtual hearings, which is tailored to the Indian context. Indeed, every arbitration centre in India would do well to adopt protocols in this regard because the parties to arbitration would be the biggest beneficiaries," the CJI said.

The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a "catalyst" for adoption of technologies by the legal system and adoption of guidelines for virtual hearings by arbitral institutions, he said, adding that this would ensure certainty and that the process remains efficient.

The CJI was the chief guest at the event held in the Delhi High Court. Current and former Supreme Court and high court judges, members of the Bar and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The CJI said arbitration has an important role to play in fostering the rule of law and asserted that he is truly committed to developing India as an arbitration-friendly jurisdiction.

In his keynote address, CJI Chandrachud said while technology has several benefits, such as lowering the costs of legal proceedings when held virtually, it is "fallible" and issues, such as how secure an online platform is, "merit serious consideration".

He also said while retired judges are "doing amazing work" as arbitrators, opportunities must be given to young arbitrators and if the Indian legal system has to move away from being an "old boys' club", the "arbitration space can add heft to the mission to provide equal opportunity to men, to women and to them".

"The arbitration space in India can do well to foster diversity in terms of source and experience. The experiential learning that a gender-diverse arbitration pool would bring to the process must also be emphasised," the CJI said.

He also stressed the need to train judges and lawyers in the practice of arbitration and spoke on the importance of the proceedings going paperless.

Two cases in the Supreme court, which were to be adjudicated by a Constitution bench, were conducted completely without paper and Odisha even has paperless courts, the CJI pointed out.

"There is a long-standing perception that courts are behind the curve when it comes to modernising their processes.... This is slowly but surely changing. Soon, the courts will be light years ahead in terms of technology and domestic arbitration may be lagging behind," the CJI said.

He spoke on the importance of "transcriptions" of arbitral proceedings and said arbitration should also reach smaller businesses by being more affordable and interim reliefs should be readily available to the parties. PTI ADS RC

Challenging Governor's Right Unfortunate, Says Punjab Congress Leader

Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday said challenging the right of the governor to call information about certain decisions of the state government was not only "unfortunate but also avoidable", amid a row between Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Partap Singh Bajwa said there are many other challenges which are more pressing for the attention of the Chief Minister than to "embroil into undesirable and unpalatable controversies".

"The deteriorated law-and-order situation, precarious financial resources for fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Punjab, rising unemployment, agricultural crisis, environmental crisis, and seemingly insurmountable challenges being posed by narco-terrorism across the border, failing health infrastructure, and the consequent flight of industry from the state are some issues crying for whole-time attention of the government," the leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly said in a statement.

Even otherwise, Article 167 of the Constitution casts a duty upon the chief minister to furnish information relating to the administration of affairs of the state, Mr Bajwa said.

"Since the executive power of the state vests in the governor under Article 154(1) and every executive action is taken in the name of the governor, it is but a natural obligation on the part of the chief minister to furnish the information asked for by the governor," he said.

Punjab has been facing multiple challenges, therefore, the cordial relationship between the chief minister and the governor is the utmost necessity for the overall betterment of the state, the Congress leader said.

"Besides, the post of governor is constitutional, hence it deserves due respect. If the governor holds a government accountable or raises some irregularities in the functioning of the government, it must be addressed sincerely," Mr Bajwa said.

Moreover, constant situation disagreements between the governor and the chief minister are not signs of a healthy democracy, he said.

Mr Mann on Tuesday had questioned the criteria adopted by the Centre for appointing governors and the state's ruling Aam Aadmi Party demanded that Governor Purohit should be immediately shifted out.

The Chief Minister hit back at Governor Purohit after the governor questioned him on the process of selecting 36 government school principals for a training seminar held recently in Singapore, saying he has received complaints of malpractices.

Mr Mann had accused the Governor of interfering in the state government's affairs and, replying to Mr Purohit's letter made public Monday, indirectly questioned his credentials for the post.

In Latest Fridge Murder, Woman's Family Says No Clue Of Live-In, Boyfriend

The family of Nikki Yadav -- the 23-year-old strangled allegedly by her live-in partner in Delhi -- claim they did not know of the relationship. Her father has demanded the death penalty for Sahil Gehlot. "They talk of educating girls. Beti padhao. But where is the safety? They cannot provide safety to women. On top of it, the police are claiming that she was in a live-in relationship for four years. All false rumours," her uncle Suresh Yadav told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

Nikki Yadav's body was found on Tuesday, when many in the country were celebrating Valentine's Day. Sahil Gehlot had killed her during an argument on Saturday and stuffed her body inside a fridge at his family-owned restaurant, the police have said.

The argument was about Sahil's marriage with another woman, which took place the same evening, hours after the murder. The police said Nikki, who had a live-in relationship with Sahil Gehlot for long, had no clue about the marriage.

"We do not know about her live-in situation. Our whole family have no idea. These are lies that are being spread. She was sharing a room with her younger sister for the last eight months," Nikki Yadav's father Sunil Yadav told NDTV. Nikki's younger sister is pursuing a Master's degree in commerce.

The family is from Haryana's Jhajjar district and Mr Yadav runs a motor repair business in Gurugram.

Nikki, he said, used to speak to her mother on phone every evening. Asked if they had no idea about the existence of Sahil Gehlot, he said, "No. We had no idea... My younger daughter does not know anything about this. Her mother does not know anything either," he said.

His daughter, he said, was an intelligent woman who had dreams of becoming a professor.

The car in which Nikki Yadav was allegedly killed has been seized, sources said. Sahil Gehlot, who broke during questioning by the police, eventually led them to the body on Tuesday. He has been placed in police custody for five days.

This is the second murder of a young woman in Delhi allegedly by her live-in partner. Last year, Shraddha Walkar was murdered by her live-in partner Aaftab Poonawalla, who chopped her body into pieces and stored them in a fridge before disposing them across the city, the police have said.

Before Death By Suicide, IIT Student Spoke To Father For 30 Minutes: Cops

Police probing the alleged suicide by an Indian Institute of Technology Bombay student today said he had spoken to his father for around 30 minutes before ending his life, but did not mention anything about facing caste discrimination.

An official said the police have started recording statements of his hostel roommates to ascertain what led the student, Darshan Solanki, to take the extreme step.

A student organisation has alleged Solanki -- a Dalit -- was facing caste discrimination at the campus, but the IIT Bombay administration has refuted the charge.

The 18-year-old student died allegedly after jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the premier institute on Sunday (February 12). Solanki hailed from Ahmedabad and was a first-year student of BTech (Chemical).

A senior police official involved in the probe said statements of more than a dozen persons have been recorded so far.

Police had asked Solanki's parents, who visited the campus after the incident, if they have any complaint against anybody, he said.

As per statements available with the police, the student's parents had not raised any objection on probe or expressed doubt over their son's suicide, he said.

Solanki had spoken for half an hour with his father before ending his life, but during the conversation he had not said anything about facing discrimination in the institute, said the police official.

Solanki had told his father he will be visiting home on February 15, he said.

His was taken to Ahmedabad where last rites were performed on Tuesday, the official said.

"Police are thoroughly investigating the case and each and every aspect will be examined to know the exact cause of the suicide," he said.

"Reason Must Be Given...": Ashok Gehlot On Tax Survey At BBC Offices

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday slammed the Modi government over the Income Tax survey operation at the BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai, and said targeting the British broadcaster would defame the country in the world.

Gehlot also demanded that the Centre must tell the country the reasons behind "raids" at BBC offices.

The chief minister made the remarks while talking to reporters at Kota airport.

"It is beyond comprehension...the way Income Tax department, CBI and Enforcement Directorate conducting raids, what they (NDA) want," Gehlot said, adding these central agencies should have been impartial and independent.

"Now BBC has been targeted. It has credibility across the world," Gehlot said.

"Reason must be given to the country when they (NDA) have targeted the organisations like BBC and take the people in confidence on it, otherwise the government as well as the country would be defamed in the world," Gehlot said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi making fun over a goof-up during Gehlot's budget presentation in the state assembly, the CM said entire Rajasthan was defamed in the country for a minor human error of reading two paras of previous budget only for 34 seconds.

At a rally in Rajasthan's Dausa on Sunday, PM Modi had picked on a blunder at the Rajasthan Budget presentation Friday, when Gehlot mistakenly read portions of the last year's budget in the assembly.

Order For 470 Planes One Of Largest, Says Air India Chief

Air India chief Campbell Wilson said today that the order for 470 planes is one of the largest single order by any airline, anywhere, ever, and the carrier has secured a number of options and purchase rights.

The order comprises 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777-9 wide-body aircraft, as well as 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX narrow-bodies.

The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines, and the B777/787s by engines from GE Aerospace, he said in a message to Air India staff.

All 400 narrow-body aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International, he added.

"In the meantime, our capacity growth will continue to be supported by the previously announced lease-in of additional narrow-body and wide-body aircraft and the restoration-to-service of the remainder of our grounded fleet," he said.

In addition to the 470 aircraft on firm order, Air India has secured a number of options and purchase rights.

"These give us the option, but not the obligation, to take additional aircraft at already-negotiated production slots and/or prices so that we can nimbly accommodate further growth and manage risk," he said.

Air India has signed letters of intent with Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GE Aerospace and CFM International for a fleet of brand-new aircraft.

"Besides this deal being of unprecedented size, it was also incredibly complex, with two airframers and six engine suppliers all jostling for position," the Air India chief said.

He also said that there is much hard work ahead, not least to staff up for, and then fill, these new aircraft.
In a release, Boeing, meanwhile, said the agreement with Air India includes options for 50 additional 737 MAXs and 20 787-9s.

"When finalised, this will be the largest Boeing order in South Asia and a historic milestone in the aerospace company's nearly 90-year partnership with the carrier," it said.
